Obituary

Veronica Ann Stepkovich Wolke Potter

Veronica Potter, 83, of Imlaystown, passed away June 29, 2013 at St. Francis Medical Center in Trenton.  Known by all as ""Roni"", she was born in Jersey City in 1930. She graduated ahead of her class from Emerson High School in 1946 and entered Jersey City State Teachers College specializing in Nurse's Studies â?? a five year program that included training at Greystone Park (a mental facility) and Margaret Hague (a maternity hospital). This enabled her to receive a BS degree in Health Education and her state license as a Registered Nurse in 1951 at 21 years old. Her long and varied career took her skills to Middlesex General Hospital in New Brunswick, the VA Hospital in Lyons, South Amboy General Hospital, and Edison School system, and others. She retired in 1995. As hard as she worked, her family was always priority. Roni raised her children to respect people of all races and nationalities, to appreciate the variety found in the Arts, to honor nature and enjoy the outdoors, to work for success and not to settle, to be independent thinkers, and to find God in their heart's content. Long before Title IX, she coached girls basketball in the 1960's, and developed summer arts and crafts classes with her neighbors for young students!  All of her life Roni loved to travel and found her a shipmate in Frank. They traveled across country with their camper, and also took several cruises. She had a keen eye and enjoyed photography.  To say she was a voracious reader may be an understatement â?? her library card should've been platinum!  Another passion was cooking and she followed Julia Child from day one often using her family and friends as ""guinea pigs"" in her quest for a great meal or dessert. Roni was a longtime Imlaystown area resident and a part time resident of Bradenton, FL.  She liked to volunteer for the local Board of Elections and was a registered Democrat. She was always active in her church, lately as a member of St. John's Catholic Church in Allentown. She was very proud of being a long time participant in the Harvard's Nurses Study.

Predeceased by two sons, Stephen  and Martin  Wolke, she is survived by her husband of 24 years, Frank W. Potter; her children, Michael, Laura  and Thomas Wolke and Marienne Wolke-Gallagher and her husband Richard; her grandchildren, Christopher Sullivan, Lisa Balog and her husband Joshua, and Sonja  and Anna Wolke; her great grandchildren, Emily and Maxine Balog; a sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Herbert Ziefel; a sister-in-law, Joan Gordon; a former exchange student turned lifelong friend, Victor Artolazabal of Argentina,  as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Saturday 10am, July 6 th at St. John's Church, 1282 Yardville Rd., Allentown.  Inurnment will be private with the family.  Friends may call Friday from 6-8pm at the Peppler Funeral Home, 114 S. Main St. Allentown.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Roni's name to the Allentown Public Library, PO Box 383, Allentown, NJ 08501, or The American Heart Association 800-242-8721, or the Diabetes Action Research & Education Foundation  202-333-4520.
