IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Thomas G.
Smith, Iii
May 31, 1951 – June 3, 2020
Thomas G. Smith, III, 69, of Allentown, passed away Wednesday, June 3, 2020 at his home, surrounded by the comfort of his family. Born in Trenton, he grew up in Hamilton, and was a longtime Allentown area resident. Tom graduated from Quinnipiac University in Hamden, CT, and spent the majority of his career working for the State of New Jersey, Department of Banking and Insurance before retiring at age 60.
Tom loved sports – he played on both the soccer and baseball teams at college, spent years thereafter on the hot corner of many a softball diamond, and devoted countless evenings to coaching all three of his children in the Allentown sports leagues. He was also a characteristically diehard Philly sports fan.
He had a gregarious personality that couldn't resist an opportunity for a joke, and he loved to make others smile. His generous nature led him to become an active member at the Allentown Presbyterian Church, through which he volunteered time at the community food pantry. Naturally musical, his voice stood out in the pews on Sunday, and he could often be caught humming, singing, or outright belting, a tune. He also enjoyed traveling and taking long car rides to explore new places and landscapes, and later in life, he developed a particular affinity for photography. Tom also volunteered weekly in his wife's classroom at Kuser Elementary School.
Son of the late Adeline and Thomas G. Smith, II; he is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Gail Smith, his three children, Zachary and his partner Amanda Gochee, Jacquelyn and her husband Thomas Pagano, and Brandon Smith; his sister and brother-in-law, Diane and Robert Kilby as well as many extended family and friends.
Due to the current pandemic, services will be private with the family. A celebration of his life will be planned at a later date for family and friends. Memorial contributions may be made in Thomas' name to the Allentown Presbyterian Church/Food Pantry, PO Box 122, Allentown, NJ 08501. Arrangements are under the direction of Peppler Funeral Home, Allentown.
