Obituary

Shirley Doris Holman, 76, departed this life into God's eternal care on Thursday, January 14th, with her loving family at her side. Shirley was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, nurse, and special friend to all whose lives she touched. Born in Cranbury to Doris and Charles Holman, she lived in Dutch Neck on Handiholm Farm or next door, all her life before moving to Mansfield in 2006. Shirley graduated from Princeton High School in 1951, attending NJ College (now Douglas College, Rutgers University) and later attending Columbia University- Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing, becoming a registered nurse in 1956. Being a registered nurse was her true calling in life. As a registered nurse, Shirley worked at Princeton Hospital - both in the emergency room and with the Visiting Nurse Association. Later she would become the school nurse at WWPHS (now South), and the Director of Nurses at several adult communities. Shirley then returned to bedside and hospice nursing where she found the most fulfillment. She said that she always ""received more by giving than her patients did"". She truly loved and learned so much from each and every patient - no matter their age, ailment, or duration of her care. Shirley was a proud member of the First Presbyterian Church of Dutch Neck for over 60 years and a member of the ""Corner Brighteners""- a compassionate service group of the church. She had an unmatched sense of humor, and always kept everyone laughing. She was also an avid Mets fan.

Shirley is survived by her husband, Wesley, daughter and son-in-law, Holly and Norman Crochetiere, daughter, Joy Holman and Bob Barber, son, Guy Holman, and grandchildren, Norman Crochetiere, Kerri Crochetiere and Brian Taylor, and Wesley, Joy and Alexandra Holman. She is also survived by many special friends, nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

A memorial service will be held at a date to be determined. As Shirley gave so much in life, in lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to her favorite charities: HomeFront, 1880 Princeton Avenue, Lawrenceville, NJ 08648, www.homefrontnj.org; Doctors Without Borders USA, PO Box 5030, Hagerstown, MD 21741-5030, www.DoctorsWithoutBorders.org; TASK (Trenton Area Soup Kitchen), PO Box 872, Trenton, NJ 08605, www.trentonsoupkitchen.org or to Visiting Nurse and Hospice Services, 204 Creek Crossing Blvd., Hainesport, NJ 08036 www.vnhsnj.org. Arrangements under the direction of the Peppler Funeral Home, Allentown.
