IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Sallie T.
Kokas
August 8, 1928 – August 16, 2024
Sallie T. Kokas , 96, of Bordentown, passed away at home on August 16, 2024, with her family by her side. She was a life-long resident, raising all of her ten children here and never wishing to live anywhere else. Sallie held her church, St. Mary's (now Mary, Mother of the Church Parish) close in her heart and spent many years in retirement running the Church Flea Market, an initiative she started to provide additional revenue to St. Mary's School. She was also a member of the Alter Rosary Society, and many other committees within the church over the years. Although she was unable to attend church in her latter years, she remained connected by regular visits from the parish clergy and receiving Communion.
Sallie attended elementary school at St. Mary's and attended high school at Cathedral High School. She would later wed at St. Mary's and always live close to the church. She regularly attended her high school reunions and would always receive the award for having the most children in her graduating class.
Sallie loved to travel, whether it was to many areas of Canada in two cars with her young family, or to Italy with her children as adults. She ventured along with some of her Tunney cousins to Ireland as well as the Bordentown Senior Citizens to Hawaii, Branson, Missouri and Nova Scotia. And she could often be found traveling on some bus trip with her sister to the casinos in Atlantic City. You could always see her dancing along with the bands as they made their way up Union Street during the Halloween Parade and going to the Street Fair, the Iris Festival, the Peach Festival and other town traditional events just to run into old friends and chat.
After raising her family, Sallie joined the workforce, where she served as a Claims Examiner assisting many area residents navigate the process at the Unemployment Office. Sallie was recognized by former Governor Florio for Outstanding State Government Service. St. Mary's also presented Sallie with a Testimonial from Pope Jone Paul II for her dedication to the church in her tireless volunteering in support of her faith.
Sallie is predeceased by her father, Justice of the Peace, William P. Tunney and her mother, Mary K. Tunney, as well as her beloved husband, Michael Kokas and her sister, Helen Marie Bogdan.
