Obituary

Ruth Macan Rhoad, 75, of Allentown, NJ, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 27, 2013, surrounded by her loving family at Robert Wood Johnson Hospital in Hamilton, NJ. Born in Perth Amboy, she spent most of her adult life in Cherry Hill, before retiring with Ed to their dream life at the shore in Avalon, and recently moving to Allentown. A graduate of Cedar Crest College, Ruth was a self-employed accountant and tax preparer. But her true vocation was that of a devoted wife and mother, who selflessly gave of herself in service to others in everything she did. She touched everyone she met, and even the ravages of the dreadful, debilitating disease of Lewy Body Dementia that eventually took her life could not deprive her of the dignity, grace, and beauty she exhibited her whole life. She will be missed by many, and never forgotten by those who knew and loved her.

Daughter of the late Scott and Rigmor Macan, she is survived by her loving husband of 55 years, Ed Rhoad; her children and their spouses, Scott and Bernadette Rhoad of Smithville, NJ, Bob and Audrey Rhoad of Allentown, NJ, and Jen and Ed Wornom of Yorktown, VA; her grandchildren, Brandon, Kaylyn, Ethan, Sarah and Alek Rhoad and Daniel, Matthew and Joshua Wornom; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Betty Brittain of Danville, PA and Carol and Rich Hague of North Brunswick, NJ; as well as many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, December 8, 2013, at 4:00 p.m. at the Allentown Presbyterian Church, 20 High St. Allentown, NJ 08501. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the "Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania, Grossman Lab" and sent to Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania, C/O Dr. Murray Grossman Lab, Department of Neurology Research, 3400 Spruce Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104. Dr. Grossman was Ruth's treating neurologist, and is a leading researcher into the causes and treatment of Lewy Body Dementia.

Arrangements under the direction of Peppler Funeral Home, Allentown.
