IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Richard A.
Wallace
August 31, 1924 – May 30, 2020
Richard A. Wallace, 95, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 30, 2020 at his home in Columbus, NJ, surrounded by his family. Born in New York City on August 31, 1924, he was the son of the late Charles and Anna Wallace, brother of the late Irene Pollard, Larry Wallace, Lorraine "Cookie" Gebler and Margaret "Margie" Luikart. Richard served his country in WW2 in the US Navy aboard the USS Arikara (AT-98) as a Motor Machinist, Mate First Class. He was one of the rare veterans of WW2 who served his country in both Operation Overlord (D-Day) and in the battle of Okinawa. After the war, Richard continued his life at sea working for Pennsylvania RR and then Mobil Corp as a Chief Engineer on sea going tugboats.
He and his late wife, Florence, raised their 12 children in a beautiful home in Roselle Park, NJ. In caring and providing for his family, Richard showed there was no skill he didn't have. A gifted carpenter and gardener, he maintained a stunning property with a full garden, fruit trees and a large yard for his children to play. The pride and work put into his home reflected the love he had for his family. In time, the winters of New England enticed the family to move to Windham, NH. Richard continued his woodworking with a full shop in his home and further pursued his love of photography. His two favorite subjects which he documented thru film was his life at sea and his growing family.
In 1986, he and Florence, his bride of 51 years and the love of his life, moved to Bethlehem, PA to be closer to their greatest source of pride their grandchildren. From here, he and Florence would visit their many children and grandchildren. There would also be large gatherings of family for the holidays that provided endless memories.
Richard is survived by his brother Donald Wallace. He was the proud father of six sons: John, Richard, Stephen, Paul, Andy and Carl and six daughters: Susan, Dorothy, Dorean (Deceased), Janis, Laura and Joanne and their respective spouses. He was a man of great character and honor, he will be missed by his children, his 30 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren and 9 great-great grandchildren who loved and admired him.
Services and Interment will be private due to the current situation, however, a memorial service celebrating Richard's life will be scheduled at a later date.
