Mr. Richard Shawn Kilby, age 63, died Dec. 19, 2011 in his home in Upper Freehold Township. Born Aug. 8, 1948, in Manhattan, NY, he was a U.S. Marine, a loving husband and father to four children and grandfather of two, an entrepreneur, and member of the Knights of Columbus. He attended Carteret High School, New Jersey and Artesia University, New Mexico before joining the Marine Corp, where he served from 1967 to 1969. Afterwards he attended Jersey City State College. He then started a property management company of which he served as president for 25 years. Through this company he managed a handful of properties in Jersey City, including St. John's Condominiums. He made a career of property management but his entrepreneurial spirit propelled him into fields such as construction management, elevator cab manufacturing, property maintenance, urban renewal and equestrian and agrarian management. He managed the construction of many projects in north and central New Jersey, including Chadwick Square in Howell, Valley Plaza in South Orange and the banquet hall of the Cranbury Inn in Cranbury. He also helped institute and was a major contributor to the Journal Square Restoration Corporation, which restored Journal Square in Jersey City in the mid 1990's.
He died peacefully with his family at his side in the house he built. He is survived by his wife Patricia of Upper Freehold; his mother, Florence of Sayreville, his sister Donna Maul and her husband Martin Maul of Sayreville; his brother Kenneth Kilby of Sacramento, California. He is also survived by his daughter Jennifer Tawney, her husband Eric Tawney and their children Jacob and Adele Rose; as well as his sons Sean of Jersey City, and Kevin and David of Upper Freehold.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 9am on Thursday, December 22 nd at St. John's Church, 1282 Yardville Rd., Allentown. Interment will follow in Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Cemetery. Friends may call Wednesday 2-4pm and again 7-9pm at the Peppler Funeral Home, 114 So. Main St. Allentown. A brunch in his honor will be held after the burial service at The Cranbury Inn, 21 South Main Street, Cranbury, NJ, 08512 (compliments of Tom and Gay Ingegneri). In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society 3076 Princeton Pike, Lawrenceville, NJ 08648 or Knights of Columbus Council # 7333 1282 Yardville Rd., Allentown, NJ 08501.
