IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Raymond E.
Margerum, Iii
June 23, 1946 – March 26, 2020
Raymond E. Margerum, III, age 73, passed away on Thursday, March 26, 2020 at the Masonic Home of Burlington, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Philadelphia on June 23, 1946, Raymond (Ray) was raised in Yardley, PA and attended Pennsbury High School. He graduated from East Carolina University, where he majored in Mathematics and was President of the local Sigma Chi Fraternity chapter. Ray married his college sweetheart, Patricia Ann (Larson) Margerum, on December 13, 1969 in the Fort Bragg Main Post Chapel in Fayetteville, NC. Ray and Patty started their life together in Exton, PA, and lived for several years in Fairfax, Virginia before settling in Pennington, NJ. They later retired in Allentown, NJ.
In Fairfax and Pennington, where the couple raised their family, Ray worked as an international software sales executive with Applied Data Research and a number of other technology firms. Throughout his career, Ray was always a top performer, a "salesman's salesman", whose gregarious nature, unassailable logic, honesty, empathy, and sheer determination consistently won over the hearts and minds of his customers. Like his business acquaintances, Ray's friends were also taken with his transparency, generosity and authentically good nature.
In his professional roles, Ray traveled extensively in dozens of countries on six continents. Closer to home, Ray enjoyed playing golf and the lifelong friends that he made as a member of the Country Club of Fairfax and Trenton Country Club. During his retirement, Ray was an active member of the Allentown Presbyterian Church, for which he performed mission work in Guatemala and served as a youth mentor and Meals on Wheels volunteer. Ray was also a passionate investor who enjoyed researching financial markets and current events.
Ray's family will fondly remember his enthusiasm for sales and his enjoyment of fine cars, rare steaks, blue cheese, and hot-buttered popcorn. Ray had a mischievous sense of humor and relished activities that could be adapted into friendly competition. He often played bridge and billiards and loved imparting his joy for these types of games as a "Pop Pop" to his grandchildren. He taught them cards, chess and a variety of magic tricks that they will forever treasure.
Son of the late Alvira (Konopka) and Raymond E. Margerum II, Ray is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Patty; his son, Scott Margerum; his daughter and son-in-law, Amy and Gregory Marino; grandchildren, Abigail, Greyson and William Marino; his brother, Barry Margerum; step-brothers Allan, Craig and Phil Smith; and many nephews, nieces and cousins.
A memorial service will be held at a later date at the Allentown Presbyterian Church. Memorial contributions to the Church may be made in Raymond's name.
