Pedro V. Garcia, M.D ., 86, passed away peacefully on May 14, 2021 at his home in Moorestown, NJ with his family by his side. Born in Havana, Cuba, he received his bachelor's degree from LaSalle College and graduated from the University of Havana School of Medicine in 1960.
He arrived in the U.S. in 1966 and passed the Educational Council Foreign Medical Graduate Exam in 1968. Until 1970, he worked as a House Physician at Camden County General Hospital in Lakeland, NJ. After he became licensed by the Psychiatry and Neurology Board, he worked as a Staff Physician at Trenton Psychiatric Hospital. In a career spanning several decades, Dr. Garcia has maintained both a private practice and associations with Rancocas Valley Hospital in Willingboro and Virtua Memorial Hospital in Mount Holly, where he is an Emeritus staff member. He provided psychiatric coverage for the "Screening and Crisis Intervention Program" (SCIP) for both hospitals over the years. He also worked for the NJ Office of the Attorney General, Department of Corrections, as a Senior Clinical Psychiatrist at Trenton State Prison, as well as a consultant at the Garden State Correctional Facility in Yardville and Riverfront Prison in Camden. At Age 83, he was still working full-time at a local community mental health facility serving the most vulnerable and underserved population of patients and only retired after becoming disabled in July of 2017.
Dr. Garcia was a Fellow of the College of Forensic Examiners, a life-member of the American Psychiatric Association (APA), the South Jersey Chapter of the APA, and the American Medical Association. Most importantly, he was an exceptional man who dedicated his entire life to medicine and possessed an enormous faith in God.
Predeceased by his parents, Vivino and Emilia Garcia Arbesu and his first wife Miriam Garcia, Pedro was a loving husband, a proud father and grandfather, and a cherished brother with a great sense of humor. He is survived by his beloved wife of 35 years, Kathleen Kula Garcia, his children: Vivino Garcia, John P. Garcia, Ani Garcia Hill, Dean J. Radley, Michael J. Radley, his sisters: Mercedes Gomez of Hialeah, FL and Marta Garcia de Mas of Havana, Cuba.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00AM Thursday, May 27, at Mary, Mother of the Church, 45 Crosswicks St., Bordentown, NJ. Friends may call Thursday morning from 9:00AM to 10:30AM at the Peppler Funeral Home, 122 Crosswicks St., Bordentown, NJ. Internment will follow in Bordentown Cemetery.
