Obituary

Frances Montague "Monty" Caldwell (née Gillham), died at her home in Crosswicks, NJ, on August 7, 2016, after a yearlong illness. She was 78.

Monty Caldwell was born in 1938 in Memphis, TN, to her parents, Lt. Col. William T. and Frances H. Gillham. Her father was an officer in the Army during WWII and was an aide to Gen. Douglas MacArthur during the Occupation of Japan. She graduated from Northside High School in Atlanta, GA, in 1956, and received a degree in home economics from Florida State University in 1960. She married Cullen "Jack" Caldwell in 1961 and they moved north to New Jersey that same year, where he was employed as a jazz bassist at the Jersey Shore. For 28 years, Monty was a beloved elementary school librarian in the North Hanover Township, NJ, school district, and it was through her work there that she participated in one of the first post-Communist teacher exchanges with Russia in 1991. She also worked with educator E.D. Hirsch, providing data for his books on cultural literacy. After her retirement in 1994, she worked part time as a children's librarian at the Bordentown Library. Monty was a member of the Crosswicks Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), and was active in many civic and cultural organizations in Crosswicks.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Cullen "Jack" Caldwell; her son, Russell Caldwell of Crosswicks, daughter and son-in-law Katherine Caldwell and Bob Bauer of Asheville, NC, and daughter Rachel Caldwell of Troy, PA; a grandson, Daniel Bauer, of Asheville, NC, granddaughters Heather Bauer of Asheville and Alyssa Salas of Wilmington, NC; two sisters, Emily Middleton of Harlem, GA, and Martha Waskey of Dalton, GA; a sister-in-law, Rachael Bennett of Pell City, AL; eleven nieces and nephews; and four great-grandchildren.

There will be a Quaker memorial service on Sunday, August 21, at 1:00 p.m. at the Crosswicks Friends Meeting House, 15 Front Street, in Crosswicks, N.J.
