Monica Lynn Weaver was born in 1964 and raised by her loving parents, Benjamin and Lucy-Mae Weaver in Cream Ridge, NJ. She attended New Egypt Elementary School and Allentown High School where she was active in the color guard, band and the National Honor Society. She was also, the editor of the high school newspaper and yearbook.
Monica graduated from Rider University with a Bachelor's degree in journalism and public relations and earned a Master's of Science in Education (MSEd) from the University of Pennsylvania in Higher Education Management; a Certificate of Advanced Educational Specialization (C.A.E.S) in Applied Developmental and Educational Psychology from Boston College, Chesnutt Hill, MA. She also earned an M.A. in Counselor Education from Kean University, Union, NJ, where she specialized in community and agency practice.
Monica was the Provost and Dean of the James Kerney Campus at Mercer County Community College and a devoted advocate for education, who was well-respected in the Trenton community. She served as the chief academic and administrative officer and was responsible for the overall operation of the campus including: Youth College, which includes Upward Bound, SMILE/GEARUP, Educational Talent Search, VIP 21st Century, and the Urban Academic Academy. Monica also oversaw the Community Education & Training programs, which consists of the Career Training Institute, the Community Education and Training department that houses Adult Basic Education, GED, the English Language Institute, and the Mercer County Literacy Consortium, the Trenton Makes Program, and the New Jersey Youth Corps-Trenton.
Monica held many board appointments and memberships: Trenton Downtown Association, Trenton Public Education Foundation, YWCA and the Henry J. Austin Health Center, where she served as the Chair of the Board of Trustees. She was a proud member of the Top Ladies of Distinction, Inc. and the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Epsilon Upsilon Omega Chapter. She also worked with the Trenton Public Education Fund, Trenton Policy Prevention Board, Workforce Investment Board Oversight Committee, Trenton Youth Services Commission Weed and Seed Committee, the Trenton Police Department YouthStat, The American Association for Women in Community Colleges, and the New Jersey Department of Children and Families Strengthening Families Task Force.
In the year 2004, Monica had her greatest accomplishment, the birth of her beloved daughter Kai Lyn who immediately also became the daughter of all of Monica's friends and family. Monica loved Kai more than any worldly accomplishment.
Monica is survived by her daughter Kai Lyn Weaver; father Benjamin Weaver and her Aunt Amanda Goodson. Her mother Lucy Mae Weaver (Nee Harris) predeceased her as did her brother Ben Weaver Jr. She is also survived by relatives Dianne Weaver, Leasha Weaver and Christopher Weaver as well as a host of other relatives and family friends who all loved Monica dearly.
A visitation will be held Thursday, April 12 th from 9am to 12 noon with a funeral service to begin at 12pm at the Friendship Baptist Church, 111 Perry St., Trenton. Arrangements are under the direction of Peppler Funeral Home, Allentown.
