Mary Jane McCarthy, 84, of Allentown, NJ, passed away Wednesday, May 4, 2022. Born in Hoboken, NJ she was raised in Ridgefield Park and was a graduate of Holy Trinity High School in Hackensack. After graduating she worked at 3M in Ridgefield before becoming a legal secretary later in her career. Mary Jane married Frederick L. McCarthy in 1961. The couple later moved to Whippany, NJ where they raised their family and resided for 30 years before retiring to Allentown.
Mary Jane was very active in her communities in both Whippany and Allentown. From the school PTA to Girl Scouts and church, she was a dedicated volunteer. Mary Jane was a faithful member of Our Lady of Mercy in Whippany and St. John the Baptist RC Church in Allentown where she dedicated her time and energy to many church committees and groups.
As one of the first residents of the Four Seasons in Allentown, Mary Jane established many of the social groups and clubs for the community. She was a member of St John's 50+ club and enjoyed playing bridge with her friends. Above all, Mary Jane was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother who was a "mom" to many more than her biological children. She was a caring and generous friend and neighbor to everyone she knew.
Daughter of the late Agnes and Robert Walsh, she was predeceased by her loving husband, Frederick L. McCarthy and by her sister, Clare Walsh L'Esperance. Mary Jane is survived by her children, Susan McCarthy Brown and her husband Timothy of Flanders, NJ, Robert McCarthy and his wife Kathryn of North Carolina, Maggie McCarthy Baxter and her husband Jonathan of Wellesley, MA, and Gregory McCarthy of San Francisco, CA; her grandchildren, Michael, Joseph and his wife Emily, and Sarah Brown, Kendall and Erin McCarthy, and Nicholas and Emilie Baxter. The eldest of five siblings, Mary Jane is also survived by her sisters, Susan Zielinski and her husband Karol, Anne Adelgais and her husband Ardie, and Helen Walsh and her husband Rick, as well as many nieces and nephews.
A viewing will be held from 2-4pm and 7-9pm on Tuesday, May 10 th at the Peppler Funeral Home, 114 South Main St. Allentown, NJ. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11am on Wednesday, May 11 th at Our Lady of Mercy Chapel, 70 Whippany Rd, Whippany, NJ. Interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery.
