Obituary

Madeline Gavin, 88, of Allentown, passed away Tuesday, February 7, 2023 at her home. Born in Perrineville and raised in Windsor, Madeline moved to Bronx, NY in 1949. She was a 1953 graduate of James Monroe High School in the Bronx and earned her undergraduate degree from Hunter College.

Madeline was a lifelong educator and started her career as an elementary school teacher for East Windsor Schools. She went on to earn her master's degree in Administration & Supervision and take advance graduate courses at Rutgers University. As Madeline advanced in her career, she worked as Principal and later Superintendent of Schools in Washington Township and then as Superintendent of Schools at East Amwell. She retired in 2000, quickly to return to the field as Interim Superintendent at Sea Isle City, followed by Port Republic before retiring in 2007 as Interim Superintendent of Lambertville School District. She was a dedicated leader – spear-heading growth and seeing it to fruition in the communities she served.

Madeline was extremely active with many organizations over the years including the N.J.A.S.A and Delta Kappa Gamma International Honor Society for Women Educators, where she held positions with several committees. She loved the Lord and was a longtime member of the Hightstown Presbyterian Church and then Allentown Presbyterian Church where she formerly served as an Elder. Madeline was a public servant that served with integrity, serving both as Councilwoman and Council President, she instituted change in the Allentown Borough community.

Daughter of the late Thomas and Madeline Coma, she was predeceased by her first husband, George "Jay" Redmond, her second husband, Paul Richard Gavin, by her daughter, Reneé Redmond Carroll, her stepson Richard Gavin and stepson-in-law Mark Stout. One of seven children she was predeceased by her siblings, Thomas Coma, Jr., Gloria Potts, Antoinette DiAntonio, Helen Spair, Mary Jane Griffith, and Geraldine Faille. Madeline is survived by her two granddaughters, Kelsey and Madeline Carroll; her stepchildren, Robert Redmond (Sybil), Ronald Redmond (Kim), Kathy Redmond, Gail Gavin-Stout, and Pamela Farina (Chuck), as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends.

A visitation will be held Wednesday, February 15th from 10-11am with a funeral service to begin at 11 am at the Allentown Presbyterian Church, Allentown, NJ. Interment will follow in the Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Cemetery, Arneytown.
