M. Elaine Gleghorn Brooks – She was born in the smallest upstairs bedroom of a modest brick farmhouse in Mount Jackson, Pennsylvania on Christmas Eve 1938. She passed away on Tuesday, April 3, 2018 following a brief illness. Her parents were the late Willis S. Gleghorn and Helen M. Reed Gleghorn.
She was married to Bob Brooks for thirty years, becoming a widow at the age of fifty when he passed away all too soon. Elaine began her life as an unassuming farmer's daughter. Growing up on a farm gave Elaine a fun and unique childhood. Especially so since her grandparents, Hubert and Elizabeth Reed lived on the same farm. Nearby farms were populated with aunts, uncles, and a host of cousins. Elaine loved helping her dad with doing chores around the barn and riding on the tractor in the fields. Her favorite memories surrounded her days from when she was a kid.
Elaine wore many hats in her time. She was a file clerk before she married, a devoted wife and mother, drove a school bus, and following her husband's death she went to work in the office of the Middlesex Surgical Center for twenty years. She enjoyed ceramics and crafts of all kinds – many examples of which will remain as treasured heirlooms.
Elaine's proudest achievement was being a doting Granny to seven grandkids. Granny loomed large in each of their lives and she worked very hard to make many special memories for every one of them. Elaine's legacy will live on in her grandchildren: Katrina, Amanda, Kelly, Michael, Allison, Thomas, and Rachel. Granny's love will surround them all the rest of their lives.
Elaine is also survived by her four sons and their wives: Robert and Sue, John and Laura, Ray and Cindy, and Mike and Kathy. There will be a great empty space in each of their lives with her departure. The memory of her constant generosity will remain, always.
Since her husband's unexpected passing, without even realizing it, Elaine built an entirely new life for herself out of that central tragedy. She began a career, moved into a brand new home at the Four Seasons in Allentown, made many new friends, enjoyed cruises – one of them through the Panama Canal, and took trips to Europe and more. Elaine, who could not swim and was deathly afraid of water, even swam with dolphins!
All will miss her easy laugh and usually good nature. She was tidy and organized. She always had a keen sense of what needed to be done and made her plans accordingly. Leaving us all behind now is just the last thing she had to do. She's off to see and be with Bob…..
Friends may call between 9:00 and 11:00 at the Peppler Funeral Home in Allentown on Tuesday, April 10th. Interment will be at the Brainerd Cemetery in Cranbury at noon – when the church bells are ringing. In keeping with Elaine's wishes the service will be simple and direct. A repast will be held at the East Windsor Volunteer Fire Company No1, 51 One Mile Road, East Windsor, NJ 08520 immediately following the interment.
Elaine liked flowers – so, in lieu of flowers --- go ahead and send flowers. But if you are otherwise inclined, please feel free to donate in her name to your local Volunteer Fire Department or Rescue Squad.
