Larry Alan Schmalbach

Rev. Dr. Larry A. Schmalbach, 78, of Allentown, New Jersey, passed away on Friday, September 18, 2026.

Born in Mount Holly, Larry made his home in Allentown for many years. He attended Philadelphia College of Bible, now Cairn University, and Dallas Theological Seminary before earning his Doctor of Letters degree from Drew University.

Larry devoted his professional life to Christian ministry and education. He served for many years as pastor of Hope Baptist Church in East Windsor, where he preached, counseled, and cared for his congregation. He later brought his pastoral experience and love of learning to Cairn University, serving as a professor until his retirement. Whether ministering from the pulpit or teaching in the classroom, Larry dedicated his life to sharing his faith, guiding others, and preparing students for lives of service.

Hymns held a special place in Larry’s faith and scholarship. His doctoral dissertation explored hymnody, reflecting his deep appreciation for the theology, history, and beauty found in sacred music. One of his greatest joys was listening to his wife, Karen, play the piano and organ in church.

Larry also believed strongly in serving his community. Earlier in his life, he volunteered for many years with East Windsor Volunteer Fire Company No. 2, giving his time in service to his neighbors.

A member of Graceway Bible Church in Hamilton, Larry remained deeply grounded in his Christian faith throughout his life. Away from the church and classroom, he was a skilled woodworker who enjoyed reading, working with his hands, and spending time outdoors.

The son of the late Frances and George Schmalbach Jr., Larry is survived by Karen L. Schmalbach, his loving wife of 56 years; his sons, Joshua Schmalbach and his wife, Amanda, and Nathan Schmalbach; his grandchildren, Garrett, Griffin, Inara, and Ewan; his brothers, Gary, Neil, Richard, and Ronald; and many nieces and nephews.

Larry will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather; a faithful pastor and teacher; a dedicated community servant; and a man whose influence lives on through his family, his congregations, and the generations of students he taught.

A memorial service will be held at 11am on Friday, October 2nd at Graceway Bible Church, 1934 Klockner Road, Hamilton, NJ 08619. Doors will open at 10am.
