Obituary

Janet Frances West Williams, 91, of Crosswicks died peacefully at home on March 2nd, 2020. Born in Trenton, NJ, daughter of Edith Frances Richardson and Dr. Roscoe Lambert West, President, Trenton State College, she was a life-long resident of the area. Jan was Vice President of williams-BUILDER, in partnership with her husband Harry H. Williams, Jr., President. Together they built a nationally recognized design-build firm.

Jan attended Trenton High School. 'Westie' graduated from Colby-Sawyer Junior College, New Hampshire, in 1948, where she "learned to live with others and understand new ideas," after which she attended Colby College, Maine, earning a BA in History, Government, and Economics. After college, she worked as a children's librarian in Trenton.

Jan was named National Remodeler of the Year (1997) by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), served as Chair of the National Council, NAHB, and Director of both the New Jersey and Central Jersey Builders Association. She was featured in several publications, including the covers of Professional Remodeler and Builder/Architect . "50 years ago, a woman in the construction business was an anomaly. I enjoyed being a pioneer!" Jan cofounded 2 dormant libraries, serving as President of Crosswicks library (and, at one time or another, Treasurer and Trustee).

Among her many memberships and offices, Jan was President of the PTA, and most importantly to her, Clerk and Trustee of the Crosswicks Monthly Meeting of the Society of Friends. "Jan has been a vital influential part of Meeting for many decades, which will sorely miss her presence and ready smile."

Jan and her husband enjoyed "Base Camp," built by Harry in Blue Mountain Lake, Adirondacks, site of family gatherings, camping/canoeing trips, and entertaining friends. They were active members of the Church of the Transfiguration. In addition, Jan loved reading, music, and bridge club, which, in one form or another, lasted 60+ years.

Jan was appreciated for her "generous and open-minded spirit, her candid opinions, her hearty laugh and kind insistence on singing grace and sending postcards." She was a person who never seemed old and retained the glamour of a spirited Trenton girl.

She is survived by her 3 children, Lee, David (Heather), Ann Haden (Jamie); 7 grandchildren, Evan, Haddie (Matt), Moriah, Noah, Ian, Sophia, and Levi; several cherished nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and -nephews; cousins; sister-law Mary Ellen Eastridge (Don) and many dear friends. Her husband died in March, 2018.

A memorial service will be held 11am on Saturday, September 25th at The Crosswicks Friends Meeting House, 15 Front St., Crosswicks, NJ 08515. Donations can be made to the Crosswicks Quaker Meeting, P.O. Box 456, Crosswicks, NJ 08515 or the Crosswicks Library Company PO Box 147, Crosswicks, NJ 08515.
