James C. Van Horn Sr., 90 of Allentown, passed away Tuesday, January 16, 2018 at Compassionate Care Hospice, Hamilton. Born in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, he was an Allentown area resident for most of his life. A US Army veteran serving during WWII, he went on to earn a degree from North East Technical School in Trenton. Jim was very proud of his military service but his passion and dedication was to the Hope Fire Company. With over 55 years of selfless service, joining in 1960, he was an exempt member. Over the years he served as past Chief, past Secretary, trustee and as a member of the fund raising committee. He loved the time he spent at the fire house and with his fellow fire fighters.
Son of the late Bertrand and Ethel Van Horn, he was predeceased by six siblings and by his loving wife of 34 years, Charlotte G. Van Horn, who died in 1983. A loving father, grandfather and great grandfather, Jim is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Jim Jr. and Linda Van Horn of Allentown; two daughters and son-in-law, Suzanne C. Gavin of East Windsor and Vicky and Philip Shortino of Celina, TX; grandchildren, James J. Van Horn, Christopher A. Van Horn and his wife Jodi, Aaron M. Van Horn, Kelly Antczak and her husband Michael, Jason Van Brunt and his wife Cindi and Krista Gillen and her husband Rodney; great grandchildren, Ashley Gillen, Jason Alexander Van Brunt, Alyssa Gillen, Matthew Van Brunt, Charlotte Marie Van Horn and Nolan James Van Horn; a sister, Marlene Pfeiffer of Ft. Wayne IN as well as many nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be held 12pm on Saturday, January 20th at the Hope Fire Company, 82 Rt. 526, Allentown, NJ. The Rev Suzanne Schafer Coates will officiate. Interment will follow in Allentown Methodist Cemetery. Friends may call Friday from 6-8pm at the Hope Fire Company. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Jim's name to Hope Fire Company, PO Box 547, Allentown, NJ 08501 or to Gift of Life, Donor Program, 401 N 3rd St., Philadelphia, PA 19123. Arrangements are under the direction of Peppler Funeral Home, Allentown.
