Obituary

Hedwig M. Kelly, formerly of Bordentown, N.J., passed away at the Golden Living Health Care Center in Doylestown, Pa., on Wednesday, June 4. She was 101 years old.

The daughter of Michael and Emelia Krajewski, Hattie was raised in the Polish community of Trenton, N.J. She attended Holy Cross Elementary School and was a member of its first graduating class. She also attended Trenton High School and the business school that became Rider University. As a young woman, she was employed by both the Hildebrecht and Stacey Trent Hotels, eventually becoming head hostess of the Stacey Trent Coffee Shop.

She and her husband, William J. Kelly of Staten Island, N.Y., resided in a number of cities in New York State, eventually returning to Trenton in the early 1940s.

She began a second career in retail clothing, as manager of the children's department in the Trenton Lerner's store. She was promoted to store manager at the Lerner's in the original Levittown shopping center, a post she held for twenty years. One of the few women to manage a large national retail chain store at that time, she also served as secretary of the Levittown Businessmen's Association.

In her retirement years, Hattie became a founding member of the National Museum for Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C., and was a member of the International Women's Writing Gild. In her 90s, she attended two of their conferences at Skidmore College and at the time of her death was the Guild's oldest living member.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William; oldest daughter Praxeda Kelly Elischer; and son-in-law Richard Mazza. She is survived by two daughters, Marylou Kelly Streznewski and her husband, Thomas, of Furlong, Pa., and Kathleen Kelly Mazza of New York City; Elischer grandchildren Jenn, Glenn, Shawn, and Victoria and her husband Kevin Lang; Streznewski grandchildren Marina and husband Alan Alper; Thomas and wife Cynthia; Andrew; and Alexandra and husband Robert Reilly. She has twelve great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at the Peppler Funeral Home, 122 Crosswicks St., Bordentown, N.J. at 10 a.m. on Monday, June 9. Friends and family are invited to call at Peppler's on Sunday, June 8, between 5 and 7 p.m. Interment will be at St. Mary's Cemetery, Trenton.
