Obituary

Harold L. "Sonny" Elliott, 88, died peacefully at RWJ-Hamilton on February 5, 2019.  Sonny was predeceased by his parents, Cecil and Marguerite Elliott, his sister Marguerite Jane LaBate, and his brother, Russell Earl Elliott.  He and his uniquely infectious smile will be greatly missed by his wife of 68 years, Joyce, his beloved Bichon, Toodles, brother-in-law, H. Taylor Bunting II, sister-in-law, Louise Bunting, many nieces and nephews, friends and neighbors.

Harold was born in 1930 and raised in Bordentown, NJ, during the Great Depression. He was more typically known throughout his life as "Sonny", the nickname having been given to him by his father after Al Jolson's version of the song, "My Sonny Boy". He relished sharing stories about his childhood and teen years and many adventures with his family and friends from the neighborhood and school. He and his high school sweetheart, Joyce Bunting, married in 1951, recently marking their 68 th anniversary.  As a teen and adult, he enjoyed all sports, playing football and baseball. After graduation from Wm. McFarland High School, Sonny worked for Public Service Electric and Gas from 1949-1989, retiring after 39 years of service, having also served in the Naval Reserve for 8 years. He was a parishioner of St. Matthias Episcopal Church in Hamilton, having gifted a stain glass window in the Elliott family name, and Christ Episcopal Church in Bordentown. He took great interest in tracing and documenting 8 generations of his family's Irish and German immigrant heritage. Strong-willed, yet unpretentious, he had a keen understanding of, and was willing to share his insights on, a variety of topics. He was always generous with causes promoting humane treatment of animals.

"You're sent from heaven/And I know your worth./You've made a heaven/For me here on earth./And the angels grew lonely/Took you because they were lonely./I'm lonely too, Sonny Boy."

Funeral Mass for Harold will be held 10 am Monday, February 11th at Christ Episcopal Church, 128 Prince St, Bordentown, NJ. A viewing will be held the afternoon prior from 3pm until 5pm at The Peppler Funeral Home, 122 Crosswicks St. Bordentown.
