George Vernon Reed, 95, passed away Tuesday, February 23, 2016 at his home with his family by his side. Born in Trenton he resided in Hamilton Township most of his life. He was a graduate of Bordentown High School class of 1938 and was a WWII Veteran. Vern served as a
Navigator/Bombardier in the U.S. Army Air Corps and was stationed in Papua, New Guinea. He retired from New Jersey Bell after over 35 years of service.
In his youth he enjoyed playing baseball, and played for the Central Jersey and Trenton Pottery's Industrial Leagues. After a scout for the Philadelphia A's saw him pitch, he was given a tryout. Upon retirement, Vern volunteered as a bus driver for the NRCPL, was a member of the Friends of the Library, Literacy Tutor, and delivered Meals on Wheels on the weekends. He was a long time member of the Crosswicks United Methodist Church, where he held many positions including Sunday school teacher, Lay Leader, Lay Speaker, and caretaker of the cemetery. He was an avid reader, a terrific gardener, and a Lifetime Blood Donor. He will be deeply missed.
Predeceased by his parents Lindley and Mary Reed, his brother Donald Reed, his sister Gladys Sullivan and sons-in-law, Stewart Good and Jerry Apoldite, he is survived by his beloved wife of 71 years, Joyce? his children, Phyllis Reed Adzima (Steve) of St. Augustine, FL, Verna Good of West Amwell, Eileen Reed (Michael Smith) of Hohenwald, TN, Thomas Reed (Stacey) also of Hohenwald and Ellen Apoldite of Hamilton? his sister, Doris Doyle of Columbus? 14 grandchildren? 17 greatgrandchildren and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.
His grandson, Reverend Kenneth S. Good, will officiate a memorial service celebrating Vern's life at 11am on Wednesday, March 2nd, followed by a luncheon and visitation at the Crosswicks United Methodist Church, Ward Ave. and Church St., Crosswicks. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Crosswicks United Methodist Church, PO Box 303, Crosswicks, NJ 08515.
