Obituary

George William Povilaitis, 92, of East Windsor, passed away Friday, September 24, 2010 at Meadow Lakes in East Windsor. Born in Giberton, PA on September 28, 1917, George was a graduate of Frackville (PA) High School where he played basketball. He attended Temple University on a full football scholarship and received his degree in teaching. George was a Staff Sgt in the Army Air Force during World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater. After his honorable discharge, George helped run CG's, the family restaurant and tavern in Fountain Springs, PA for almost ten years, where he met his future wife who was working as a waitress.

A long time resident of West Windsor, ""Mr. Pov"" was a science and physical education teacher at Princeton High School for 30 years. He coached many sports, including football, basketball and baseball. He was also a driving instructor for the high school and Princeton Day School. In earlier years he gave many swimming lessons and was involved with the YMCA. Always ready with a word of encouragement, George influenced many students over the years with kindness and integrity; instilling a sense of fairness and perseverance.

George was a long standing member of many organizations including the Elks Club, the VFW and the American Legion. He maintained an interest in Temple's Alumni Service and traveled extensively over the years, most recently on shorter trips with the Princeton Getaway Club.

Predeceased by his parents, George and Margaret Povilaitis; a brother, Connie Gudaitis and sisters, Nellie Borzok and Josephine Codd; George is survived by his wife of 60 years, Helen Povilaitis (who called him ""Povie""); a niece Irene Carduff and family of Lost Creek, PA; a nephew Bob Borzok and family of Wellsboro, PA. He also leaves many sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews on his wife's side of the family including a sister-in-law Charlotte (Cindy) Tindall and nephew Frank Tindall both of Allentown and a niece Sue Stillwell and family of San Jose, CA.

The family would like to thank the staff of Meadow Lakes and Princeton Hospice for their caring and dedication. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements under the direction of Peppler Funeral Home, Allentown.
