Frank Dona, 94, of Clarksburg, formerly of Toms River and Old Bridge, NJ, passed away peacefully on January 14, 2022, at CareOne Rehab in Holmdel.
Born in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of the late Joseph and Margaret (Columbo) Dona. He served in the US Navy during WWII. His wife of 69 years, Mildred Crispino , preceded him in death on November 29, 2019.
Frank was an avid sports fan. He played basketball and baseball in his youth. As an adult, he played softball and was a long-time member of a bowling league having many a perfect game. In his retirement, he played on a senior softball team and organized a bocce league after moving to Holiday Heights in Toms River. He enjoyed the NJ Giants having season tickets for 60 years (no matter how bad the team did). He was a devoted Brooklyn Dodgers fan , adopting the Mets when the Dodgers absconded to Los Angeles. For over 20 years, he was a coach and manager in Sayre Woods South Little League. One year he brought his team to the state finals.
He will always be remembered for his strong character, never uttering a curse word. Frank always made sure everyone was taken care no matter the situation.
He is survived by his children, Lucy Rafter of Pocono Lake, PA, Margaret (Gary) Cafara of Toms River, Phyllis (Bob) Guiliano (with whom he resided), Joe (Jody) Dona of Clarksburg and Frank (Diane) Dona of Lambertville. He also leaves behind his much-loved grandchildren and great grandchildren, Raymond (Anna) Cafara , Gina (Ryan) Grady, Robert (Kristie) Guiliano , Francesca, Isabella, and Joseph Dona. Grandpa Frank will be sadly missed by Santino, Gisella, Aviana. Other survivors include his sisters , Margaret Haubert of Trenton, Frances (Frank) McDermott of Queens, NY, brother-in-law Alfred Crispino and too many nieces and nephews to count.
Viewing will be held at Peppler Funeral Home , 114 So Main St. Allentown, on Wednesday , January 19 th from 1 to 4 p.m. Burial will be held on Monday , January 24 th at 9:30 a.m. at Brigadier General Wm. C. Doyle Veterans Cemeter y, Wrightstown . Those wishing to join the procession to the cemetery, please arrive at the funeral home by 9:00am.
