Obituary

With much sadness we announce the passing of Elizabeth (Betty) Stark of Bordentown, NJ. Born February 11, 1931 to the late Anthony and Naomi (Abbott) Letts, sister of the late Robert Letts. Elizabeth departed this life into the loving arms of her Savior on February 16, 2024 at Hamilton Grove Nursing Home. It was her time, and she was ready ….

She is survived by sons Brian and (Sally) Stark of Bordentown, NJ, Kevin and (Sandra) Stark of Flowery Branch, GA., and the late Robert Stark… grandsons Christopher and Alexander Stark, great grandsons Emmett and Liam Stark and nephews Barry and Jeffrey Letts.

She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, and friend. If asked to describe her words like "kind, caring and sincere" come to mind. Having only Social Security to get by on she nonetheless made monthly contributions to her favorite charities in gratitude for all she had been blessed with. She also enjoyed working at the food pantry because it not only helped those in need but gave her the opportunity do something she also enjoyed very much…talking.

She raised three healthy boys as a single mom…something you have to experience to understand. We were no different, we fought …for attention…the TV remote…the last French-Fry...and mom would handle the insurrections as she did everything else… with humor, most of the time and if that didn't work, pleading.

Mom also loved her dogs…which she adopted out of local shelters saving them from an uncertain future. True to form mom would go for those most at risk … we had a female dog named "Fred", "Ginger" was an oversized Collie-Shepard with a foot fetish and last but not least Joe …he was special…he would get out in the morning and the call would come just as we got home from school telling us they had our dog …which, of course, they didn't since he would be laying sprawled out on his blanket listening to our conversation…so mom would get home after working all day and have to call the police and apologize …something I think she actually looked forward to.

If that wasn't enough, she also had lunches to make, clothes to wash, homework to do…and what I think we all respected and admired most was she never gave up, never quit. Our house was a mad house, all of our friends would come over and most stayed for dinner. She didn't invite them, but she never turned them away ….and in the process became a second mother for many… listening with intent as they voiced their dreams …shared their concerns or just wanted someone to talk to.

One thing we all looked forward to (especially mom) were the family picnics at our Uncle Bob's. While the food was good, seeing everyone was better, but the best was getting to play with Barry and Jeff whatever sport we wanted until we dropped. Mom? She was so happy to be around her big brother she would probably still be there if we didn't drag her away.

She loved drives to the shore, usually with her grandson's and her mom in tow and the only thing that could make it better would be a good yard sale!

She was a member of the Baptist and Methodist churches of Bordentown.

A graveside service for Elizabeth will be held 11 am Saturday April 6 at The Bordentown Cemetery, 210 Crosswicks Road, Bordentown, NJ.

In memory of Elizabeth, contributions can be made to the First Baptist Church of Bordentown, 127 Prince St., Bordentown, NJ 08505 or to a charity of your choice.
