Eli S. Firth, Jr., 96, of Freehold, passed away Wednesday, April 22, 2015 at his home. Born in Philadelphia, he was a resident of Lake Pine and West Windsor for many years before moving to Applewood Estates in Freehold. A graduate of Drexel College, he served as a Lieutenant in the US Navy during WWII and was stationed in Pensacola, Fl. Mr. Firth worked for General Electric and Campbell Soup and spent the last 25 years of his career working for the RCA Space Center. At RCA, he was actively involved in the development of early communication satellites. Mr. Firth was very active in his communities. He served on the School Boards, Planning Boards and Zoning Boards for both Lake Pine and West Windsor. He also served as a volunteer fire fighter for Lake Pine, a committeeman for West Windsor Township and the treasurer of the Applewood Interfaith Worship Service. Mr. Firth was an active member of the Allentown United Methodist Church since 1972 and loved to travel and visited many countries with his family. He enjoyed music, playing bridge, swimming and was a talented woodworker.
Son of the late Mary E. and Eli S. Firth Sr.; he was predeceased by his wives, Marion Sprigman Firth and Ruth Poinsett Firth and two brothers, Robert and William Firth. Eli is survived by children, Leslie M. Firth and Jeffrey E. Firth, both of New York, NY; two stepsons and their wives, David N. and Georgia Poinsett of Dillsburg, PA and Richard G. and Linda Poinsett of Hampton, VA; his granddaughters and their husbands, Jennifer L. Poinsett and her husband Corey Keys of Mechanicsburg, PA, Jessica A. and Jamie Mladenoff of Dillsburg, PA, Stephanie and Kevin Davis of Mechanicsville, VA, Allison and Jared Peretin of Charlottesville, VA and Melissa and Tom Flaherty of Norfolk, VA; 10 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held Monday, April 27th from 6-7pm with a funeral service to follow at 7pm at the Allentown Methodist Church, Allentown, NJ. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Allentown United Methodist Church, 23 Church St., Allentown, NJ 08501 or to Habitat for Humanity, 193 Long Branch Ave., Long Branch, NJ 07740.
