Conway
March 3, 1932 – January 31, 2021
Rev. Edward Conway, PhD, died peacefully on January 31, 2021. Beloved husband of Patricia. He was a month short of his 89 th birthday. He grew up in Cambria Heights, Queens, lived in Lindenhurst for almost 30 years before moving to Crosswicks, New Jersey. Rev. Conway joined the Navy at age 17 where he served as an electrician on the USS Wasp during the Korean War and was on the deck when the aircraft carrier hit and sunk its own destroyer. He owned a small construction company and gauged tanks for Northville Industries until the early 80s. In the 70s his learning challenges were diagnosed as dyslexia and he was able to then earn a GED, going on to get a Bachelor's, two Master's degrees and a PhD. At the same time he learned of the dyslexia, he got a calling to leave his Catholic roots behind and become a minister. He was later ordained as an Elder in the Methodist Church. Rev Conway served as the pastor for Crosswicks UMC for 18 years, the associate pastor for Emley's Hill UMC for 2 years and was pastor of Smithville UMC for several years. He also volunteered for Robert Wood Johnson Pastoral Care for 20 years. A Master Mason with Mt. Moriah F&AM, Rev Conway was a town trustee and served a term as mayor.
Predeceased by his brothers and sisters, Jimmy, Steve, Helen, Patricia, and Joan; he was the loving father of Marian (Philip), Joanne (Steve), Jineen (Josh), and Kelly (Andrew); the loving step-dad (Dad II) to Pam (Floyd) and John (the late Catherine); grandfather to Adrianne (Peter), Megan (Chris), Joseph (Danielle), Elizabeth (Marty), Cody, Jessica, Tim, Jennifer, Miranda, and Samantha and no less a grandfather to his step-grands, Kristin, the late Michael, Kyle and John and the great-grandfather to 16.
A funeral service will be held in Crosswicks United Methodist Church at 11am on Saturday March 13 th . Due to limited capacity in the Church the service will be able to be viewed at 1:00 PM on the Crosswicks UMC Facebook page https://m.facebook.com/Crosswicksunitedmethodist/ . Please contact the funeral home for more information. Interment will follow the service in the church cemetery. A celebration of his life will be planned for a later date in the summer.
Memorial contributions may be made in his name to help students in Queens and Long Island at the Dr. Conway Pay It Forward Scholarship, SUNY Empire State College, Alumni House, 28 Union Ave., Saratoga Springs, NY 12866-4310.
