David H. Turp, 89, passed away Sunday, May 25, 2014 at University Medical Center of Princeton in Plainsboro with his family by his side. Born in Groveville and raised in Hightstown, he enjoyed farm life in New Egypt prior to moving to Yardville 57 years ago where he settled in to raise his family. He was a Navy Veteran, raised Black Angus cattle and retired as a County Administrator with the Department of Agriculture.
Dave enjoyed sports, especially soccer and was enshrined in the Mercer County Soccer Hall of Fame in 1998. During his ROTC college years, he was captain of the University of Virginia Baseball Team, where he earned the nickname "Spider" for his ability to cover the field and catch fly balls. After the war he graduated from Rutgers University where he was captain of the Soccer Team. In the 50's he wore a green #8 Jersey and played softball for the Hightstown Southenders. He was a member of the Hightstown Masonic Lodge # 41 F&AM, the Hightstown American Legion Post #148, the Bordentown Elks Lodge #2085 BPOE and a member of the Groveville United Methodist Church.
Son of the late James and Anna Turp, brother of the late Donald Turp and grandfather of the late Justin David Turp, he is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Elma Borden Turp, his two daughters: Georgianna Bonsanto and her husband Joseph of Yardville and Gwen Turp of Annapolis, MD, two sisters and a brother: Maribelle Taylor of Hightstown, Ernest Turp and his wife Virginia of Hightstown and Virginia Ashman of Virginia, a grandson: Brandon Yount Turp of Annapolis, MD and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 10 am Thursday, May 29 at the Peppler Funeral Home, 114 S. Main St, Allentown, NJ. Friends may call Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Groveville United Methodist Church, 447 Church St, Groveville, NJ 08620.
