Cullen Jackson "Jack" Caldwell, Jr., died at his home in Crosswicks, NJ, on May 1, 2017, of natural causes. He was 83.
Jack Caldwell was born in 1933 in Orlando, FL, to his parents, Cullen J. and Eddie Bridges Caldwell. He graduated from LaGrange, GA, High School and attended the University of Georgia on a tuba scholarship. He left UGA in 1953 to attend the Naval School of Music in Washington, DC, and became a member of the Navy Band, playing the bass fiddle. In 1958 he was discharged from the Navy and enrolled as a music major at Florida State University, where he received his degree in 1960. While at FSU he met Frances "Monty" Gillham of Atlanta, and the two were married in May 1961 in Atlanta. They immediately headed north to Point Pleasant, NJ, where he had a summer job playing jazz on the boardwalk. For the next fifty years, Jack was a vital part of the jazz music scenes in Trenton, Philadelphia and Atlantic City. He received his Master's in Music Education at Temple University and taught at several area schools, including The Garden School in Queens, NY. In 1991-92 he made a world tour with the Glenn Miller Orchestra, and he organized several local jazz festivals in the 1990s. His final job was with the Local 802 musicians' union in Manhattan, which is where he was during the 9/11 attacks. Besides jazz, his other abiding passion was baseball, and he made many trips to Philadelphia Phillies spring training in Clearwater, FL. He was a member of the Crosswicks Friends Meeting, and he was active in many local civic organizations.
He is survived by his son, Russell Caldwell of Crosswicks, daughter and son-in-law Katherine Caldwell and Bob Bauer of Asheville, NC, and daughter Rachel Caldwell of Troy, PA; a grandson, Daniel Bauer, of Asheville, NC, granddaughters Heather Bauer of Asheville and Alyssa Salas of Wilmington, NC; sister, Rachael Bennett of Pell City, AL; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
There will be a Quaker memorial service held for Jack at a later date. Arrangements are under supervision of Peppler Funeral Home Bordentown.
