Obituary

Betty E. Carty , 85, of Columbus, NJ passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday with her loving family by her side. Born and raised in Bordentown, New Jersey, Betty had worked briefly for the State of New Jersey and the V.A. before taking on the important roles of mother, homemaker, and farm-wife for her family. When Betty wasn't pouring her heart and soul into her home, baling hay at Brook-Lynn Acres on Petticoat Bridge Road, or making her world-famous macaroni and cheese, you could find her playing card games, completing puzzles, or fiercely competing in a board game with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, known to all of them lovingly as "Oma". To secure her title as the "hostess with the mostest", she graciously hosted 10,000 people at the farm in May of 1992 for a Revolutionary War reenactment; needless to say no one has since dared try to dethrone her. Her backyard swimming pool at the farm in the summer was the place to be, where all were invited and everyone went home with a full belly, some extra sweet corn, and a smile. She was an active member of Hedding United Methodist Church, often helping out fellow congregation members in times of need, manning the "hot" station at the Oyster Supper, and contributing to discussions within the "Ruth Circle." In her younger years, she was frequently spotted at Mansfield Township Recreation Committee meetings, leading Girl Scout troops, or on the field coaching youth softball. On Tuesday nights, you could find her at her sewing group "Sew & Tell", sharing memories and laughs with her closest friends. Betty was in a local bowling league for decades, as well as an active member of the Bordentown High School Class of 1956, helping to organize incredible trips for her class' high school reunions. She thoroughly enjoyed traveling with her husband (sometimes joined by family and friends), visiting 48 out of 50 states (no offense Oklahoma and Alaska), taking annual trips to Florida and Maine, suntanning in Hawaii, embarking on a 5-week cross-country road trip, and visiting her grandchildren and their families as often as she could. Betty always had time in her day to share a recipe, lend an ear, send a thoughtful card, or enjoy a soft-serve ice cream cone. Her life revolved around making those around her feel loved, fed, and important, and for that and a thousand other reasons, she will be greatly missed.

Betty is now reunited in heaven with her daughter, Nancy Lynn Carty, her parents, Raymond and Ethel Shinn, her sisters, Josephine Durcanin and Viola Gamel, and her brother Robert R. Shinn. She is survived by the love of her life and best friend, her husband of 65 years, Ronald L. Carty Sr., her daughter, Donna Carty-Pettit of Columbus, NJ, her son, Ronald L. Carty Jr. (Barbara) of Blairs, VA, her sisters, Jane Brickner of Florence, NJ and Bonnie Shinn of Bordentown, NJ, her brothers Donald Shinn (Pat) of Columbus, NJ, and Kenneth Shinn (Rose) of Roebling, NJ, and her sisters-in-law, Diane Longstreet and Donna Applegate (Don) both of Columbus, NJ, as well as Dot Shinn of Marlton, NJ. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Nancy Roberson (Todd) of Hatteras, NC, Craig Pettit (Rachael) of Dover, MN, Kaitlynn Panacek (Kevin) of Columbus, NJ, Morgan Patten (Josh) of Wexford, PA, and Clint L. Carty of Blairs, VA. Betty was also blessed with thirteen great-grandchildren; Adam, Eli and Kellynn Roberson, Leighton, Cassidy and Reagan Pettit, Carter and Henry Panacek, Brian, Barron and Blake Patten, and Parker and Buck Carty. In addition to her listed family and many nieces and nephews, Betty acquired and is survived by many "Bonus Children" throughout her life, which is a testament to how truly great she really was.
