IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Armit E.
Harrison Sr.
July 24, 1920 – May 12, 2020
Armit E. Harrison, Sr. , 99, passed away on Tuesday, May 12, 2020, at Meadow Lakes, East Windsor, NJ, from complications of Covid-19. Born in Trenton he was a resident of Hamilton Square for most of his life. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps after Pearl Harbor, and was a WWII veteran and Purple Heart recipient, having fought in the Marshall and Marianas Islands Campaigns of Roi-Namur and Saipan, before being wounded by Japanese small arms fire during the Tinian invasion. Dad was intensely proud of the USMC and his role of Forward Scout/Observer, going out ahead of the front lines to survey enemy positions. He always said that for him the front line was the rear, and he believed that the good lord must have been watching over him as getting hit on Tinian spared him from the Iwo Jima invasion, the next mission his 4th Marine Division spearheaded and one in which he said he likely would not have survived.
After returning stateside and a long period of recuperation, Armit married his childhood sweetheart, Charlotte Van Meter and took over his father's retail milk business, and later worked for Office Specialties Inc. until his retirement. Always the gentleman, he had a wonderful sense of humor and loved a good laugh, in spite of being a long-suffering Phillies fan! Besides ably raising four sons, he was a long time congregant of the Hamilton Square Baptist Church and served on several committees. In retirement, he was a long time volunteer with several organizations including Meals on Wheels and the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen (TASK). Dad's greatest joys were derived from spending time with his wife, his grandchildren, and great-grandchildren at their lovingly maintained Victorian home and Beach Haven summer cottage. He also enjoyed family camping, coaching YMCA youth baseball in the 1960's, and travel in retirement, and he was an avid alpine skier who reluctantly had to hang 'em up when he was 86 years young!
Predeceased by his parents Armit A. and Ethel M. Harrison, and his beloved wife of 68 years, Charlotte M. Harrison (nee Van Meter), he is survived by his four sons and daughters-in-law: Armit and Susan Harrison, Christopher and Dorothy Harrison, Daniel and Barbara Harrison and Brian and Angela Harrison; his sister: Helen Litchfield; Grandchildren: Jim (and wife Kelly), Sean, Forrest, Elizabeth (and husband Jacob), Sara, Kate, and Tristan; and Great Grandchildren: Chloe, Kiley, Ella, and Oche; and several nieces and nephews.
Dad was a classic example of the "Greatest Generation" - a fine son, Marine, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was a man who quietly and ably served his country and family, always put the needs of others first; lived a long and productive life even as dementia crept in during his later years; and was a man who loved and was loved, immensely. A life well lived dad - you will be deeply missed.
A special note of heartfelt thanks goes to the Meadow Lakes Meadowside staff for their devoted memory care, and to the VITAS Healthcare staff for their wonderful hospice care during dad's final days.
