Albert E. Smith, 89, devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather died peacefully Friday, December 5, 2014, under the care of Compassionate Care Hospice located at Saint Francis Medical Center, Trenton. For a short time, Mr. Smith was a resident of St. Mary's assisted living. A lifelong resident of Lawrence Township, Albert resided most of his life in his home of 87 years. He attended Lawrence Township Schools and graduated from Trenton Central High School as a member of the class of 1943. He was a member of the TCHS track team winning several medals in the Penn Relays. He served as a second lieutenant in the US Air Corp during WWII, serving in active duty from 1943 until his honorable discharge in 1945.
As a young man, Albert volunteered as a Lawrence Township Little League Coach. He was active in his church, serving on the vestry of Grace Saint Paul's Episcopal Church. After 38 years of service, Mr. Smith retired from his position as a supervisor with the New Jersey Bell Telephone Company. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and the Lawrence Township Senior Center. In retirement, Albert devoted his life to family. His hobbies included woodworking, reading, fishing, and traveling cross country.
Son of the late John and Elizabeth Smith, he was predeceased by his wife of 59 years, Emily Smith, his brother, John W. Smith, Jr., his sisters, Blanch Hafner and Ethel Rommel and his daughter-in-law, Ann Marie Smith. Albert is survived by two sons; Donald Smith and William Smith and his wife, Lori Kiefer; daughter-in-law, Susan F. Smith; two daughters, Joyce Beebe and her husband J. Ronald, Carol Bowman and her husband, Ed. He has nine grandchildren, Amanda Munson and husband, Eric, Megan O'Hara and husband Ryan, Morgan Smith, Evan Beebe and wife, Maeve, Garrett Beebe, Elizabeth Bowman, Kate Bowman, Stephen Bowman and wife, Julie, and Amy Rorrer. He has six great grandchildren, Ella and Everett Munson, Emily and Jackson O'Hara, Grayson Foster and Gavin Bowman.
Visitation will be Saturday December 13th at 10:30 a.m. at the Peppler Funeral Home, 114 Main St. Allentown, NJ, with a service to follow at 12:00 noon. The internment will be Monday, December 15th at 10:00 am at the Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery (Chapel). Those wishing to attend the internment should meet at the funeral home at 9:00 am on Monday to proceed to the cemetery together.
