Alfred Bird, Jr., 80, of Burlington Township, died Tuesday April 29, at Virtua Memorial Hospital of Burlington County. Born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northumberland, England, he had lived in Basking Ridge prior to settling at the Masonic Home of New Jersey.
He received a Certificate of Apprenticeship in Engineering Trades from C.A. Parsons and Company Ltd. and a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering from Rutherford College of Technology, both of New Castle-upon-Tyne and a B.S. from Newark College of Engineering. He owned and operated the Aldon Engineering Company of Bernardsville, NJ.
Alfred was a member of the Genesis Lodge # 88 F.& A.M. of East Hanover and was honored for 50 years as a Master Mason in 2005. As a young man he enjoyed playing golf and piloting his airplane. Throughout his life he loved music, especially playing the trumpet.
He is survived by his former wife, Barbara-Anne Stewart, five children, Sarah Congdon and her husband James, Cynthia Reidenauer and her husband Jeffrey, Kenneth Bird and his wife Kyle, Barbara-Anne Rizzo and Heather Jean Bird, eight grandchildren, one great grandchild, and three sisters, Joan Parker, Lilian Young of England and Audrey Manzo of New Jersey.
Memorial Services will be held on Sunday, May 4 at 1 pm at the Masonic Home Chapel, 902 Jacksonville Rd., Burlington, NJ. Masonic Services will begin at 12:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Masonic Home of New Jersey, 902 Jacksonville Rd., Burlington, NJ 08016 Arrangements are under the direction of Peppler Funeral Home, Bordentown.
